Carnivorous Food Porn- Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse- Houston, Texas

Carnivorous Food Porn- Chama Gaucha Brazilian Steakhouse- Houston, Texas

I had to find something hole-free, stain-free, and dignified to wear so as not to embarrass that part of my family who actually knows how to hang out with the upper class. No small challenge. Wearing the new 50 rupee (85 cents) scarf from our beloved Shanti pretty much created world peace and stopped the other tragic events about to explode. Scarf  successfully a- pulls the eye away from that one yellowish stain on the torso of the 85 cent second-hand shirt  and b- stops my mother from pursing her lips when she saw what might have been construed as the slightest hint of cleavage. I’m happy, she’s happy. Win-win. So we needed to pick the best restaurant in H-town for this birthday celebration. I’m wearing a mother-approved outfit that my brother later refers to as ‘gorgeous’ so take this raw foodie anywhere and I am chirping happy. We end up at the rusted-finish-door-ranch-style-two-year-old Chama Gaucha in Houston.  We ate more mouth-watering meats and had a more joyful evening than...

Full Body Pampering- Skin Day Spa Houston [Photo Essay]

Full Body Pampering- Skin Day Spa Houston [Photo Essay]

After the near-deaths of Annapurna Circuit, the brown water of Kathmandu, and bunches of raw joy in India, I got to Houston knowing, knowing, knowing that I wanted to be spoiled. I wanted my mom to take me out to nice restaurants (done), I wanted to play Kalukee card game late into the nights (done), and I wanted to get some pampering done in a spa (done!). So, Groupons introduced me to Donna, Jessica, and crew at SKIN DAY SPA Houston and it was love at first sight. The ladies are unbelievably kind, funny, and amazing; the treatments were divine, and I walked away lasered, oiled, rubbed, and cleansed whole body! Yes, whole body pampering. And even got some delightful, fragrant soaps and facial products. So, check it out and yes, I am that lucky. Enjoy this photo essay of beauty, grace, and good well-deserved professional pampering. The pre-Christmas season is so joyful and bright in Houston and you’ll see that in their holiday decor as well (which I...

Blacks, Blood, and BLS International Indian Visa Office- Houston, Texas

Blacks, Blood, and BLS International Indian Visa Office- Houston, Texas

So I sit here at the BLS International office and smile so deeply into my soul. First of all, I’m joyfully impressed that it is not the jungle I assumed it would be. There are no blood stains of the carpets, no recently added skulls hanging from the ceiling, and, yes, sigh, there are no hysterically pleading patrons pulling out their eyes and groveling on the sandy gray carpet for sweet asylum. Yes, I’m a full hour early for my 9:40 appointment and only now are people lining up, but, already the sun filtering though the windows, the soft tones of patient voices all around me, and feelings in my heart in this spacious office fill me with deep peace. I think of the kindly, gentle-toned, black man who helped me get untangled in the parking garage and the sugar-sweet black gentleman who bowed and waved his hand for me to enter the elevator before me as he kind-kindheartedly escorts me to the visa office. His smile, as he...

After 18 Months in Asia- Three Oddities of the West & My Little Holiday- Houston, Texas

After 18 Months in Asia- Three Oddities of the West & My Little Holiday- Houston, Texas

“Are you doing the no deodorant Indian thing?” “How about this great perfume?” as she sprays my neck. “Toilet paper goes in the toilet.” “Good God, girl, where the hell are your shoes?” I am shocked how much I don’t fit in, how I’ve changed after eighteen months in Asia, and how funny it is not to know some social norms that I used to live by. Are you ready for three oddities of the Western world? I’m on a holiday alone in Houston, Texas and it’s really raw.  The US in Twelve-Minutes We loved our time as a family in the US, and adored our time in the RV! We’re still drooling over the idea of a USA holidays family adventure again. Kobi made a great video that I thought I could just stick in here before I tell you the odd stuff that I still can’t totally get. It’s a great video Kobi! (The post Twelve Minutes has great pics too!) Three Oddities of the Western World...

Life On The Road Saving Money: Unsuccessful Attempt Number 15 for Purple Hair and Other Hair Tragedies- Houston, Texas

Life On The Road Saving Money: Unsuccessful Attempt Number 15 for Purple Hair and Other Hair Tragedies- Houston, Texas

Cuz I don’t make a fool of myself enough. Here my dear old friend Veronica, who didn’t want to be all over the net 🙂 tried to help. I bleached it TWICE and tried, but ended up looking to Cruella D’Ville and my hair was so fried it stood up straight for two months. What I don’t do to my poor hair. At least we can all laugh at me, right? oh, and Mom, sorry I used the kitchen sink for the chemicals. It won’t happen again. I love you OH, and I look like 80+ with a really bad hair-do when it’s done. Definitely saved me money not going to the hair salon. Good thinking there Gabi. Not pretty. At all. But that’s OK, we can all laugh at Gabi in 3, 2, 1… As an added bonus: The poodle hair video (where I bark!) , Gabi cutting her bangs (aka: the disasters that occur when Gabi is bored and there are scissors around), and how I looked...

The Grandparents in Houston

The Grandparents in Houston

Our kids know very, very little of Gabi’s parents. My mom and her husband live in Houston; my dad and his wife and daughter live in Panama; and we have lived for the past 7 years in Israel. This trip was a great opportunity for us to reconnect our kids to their grandparents. Here’s a mix of video and pics that we captured in Houston that reflect some of the grandkid/grandparent bonding we hoped for. Exploring Greater Houston with Their Grandparents At the Famous Houston Children’s Museum AT Walmart!!! I so missed Walmart At the Houston Health Museum In the kitchen with Grandmother, most important explorations! In NASA with Grandfather Nechemia On the way to Kemah Nail Polish:it’s 32 seconds of pure joy. i think it is moments like this that we hold on to in our hearts for a long long time. looks so simple, so nothing really, but it is so much. just sharing, one generation doing for the another one. one of the reasons we just...
