From Murder to Love Affair- Our New Turkish Apartment Home- Holiday Lettings Pashas House- Istanbul, Turkey

From Murder to Love Affair- Our New Turkish Apartment Home- Holiday Lettings Pashas House- Istanbul, Turkey

So, we get an email confirming our stay at Holiday Letting’s Pashas House and think, “if the Muslims don’t kill us, this should be nice.” You know we’ve had My Muslim Mother, fear of Islamic terrorism, hating missionaries, and this blog’s most famous post about knowing nothing, all which has shaken up everything we know. And still, we were wary. What if the residents live with us? Can we be our loud shameless selves or do we need to tiptoe and try to scream at the kids in low-Hebrew tones so that they won’t know we’re Israeli/American Jews and murder us? Deep breath. Angels have kept us safe so far, and thus they will continue to, and yet, we didn’t expect our hosts to be the very angels we hoped would wrap us in their pearly-white featured sanctuary. Welcome to Holiday Letting’s Pashas House and all that we never expected. From the minute the taxi dropped us off, we felt love. The minute. Ali meets us in the street...

Why Kaula Lumpur Got Perfectly Delicious & Deliciously Perfect- Concorde Inn KLIA, Malaysia [Photo Essay]- Part One

Why Kaula Lumpur Got Perfectly Delicious & Deliciously Perfect- Concorde Inn KLIA, Malaysia [Photo Essay]- Part One

We adore Kuala Lumpur. Everything about her is lovely. Everything! For a family who spent so much time in jungles, on exotic islands, and in very crammed and budget shacks, living in KL was a pure ray of modern light. Of course, when we landed in KL on March 6, 2013, we assumed it would be a quick spot. Come on, we’re Jews in a Muslim country. Clearly, ‘the enemy’ wouldn’t be gracious. Clearly, we’d get our ten minutes of fame as the bodies of five Israelis found slain by the hand of my Islamic fanatic. We hate missionaries too, right? Clearly, we’d land, see we didn’t fit in, and move on. And yet, we lived in Malaysia for 98 days and in Kuala Lumpur for almost half of that time. We relished the Hari Raya Festival, fell in love with the people and ate, did some wild rapids with Nomad Adventure, laughed, and loved adventures, food, and people we never imagined our hearts would embrace with such grace....

Your One-Stop-Shop Telenovela of Family Travel Blog Trekking Adventure Hell- Day 1- Annapurna Circuit with Kids, A Multi-Media Celebration

Your One-Stop-Shop Telenovela of Family Travel Blog Trekking Adventure Hell- Day 1- Annapurna Circuit with Kids, A Multi-Media Celebration

It is time to start sharing our Annapurna Circuit with Children experience. All of it, and not just the life-threatening parts including hypothermia, fever and an extreme case of lethargic child at 5,200 meters, vomit, diarrhea, and all those drop-to-your-death cliffs that left us so very shaken up as parents who made these decisions on behalf of their children. We’d want to give you all of it. The good, the bad, the ugly, the really funny, and the thoughtful. So, welcome to Day One! It’s a lovely collection of photography and video all reflecting what our first day on the trail was like. Highlights: Oh My God! We’re ridiculously out of shape, whimpy, and totally not ready for the physical and mental challenges before us. That will sort of be the ongoing theme, in addition, to tons of furry animals, unidentified shit of all shapes and sizes, break-downs, song, tons of laughter, some serious “God, why are we doing this thing again?” talks, and amazing vistas. It’s basically your...

I Need A Vacation- When You Just Want Something Else, Somewhere Else, Somehow, and Now

I Need A Vacation- When You Just Want Something Else, Somewhere Else, Somehow, and Now

Naked, I stood there waiting for the water to turn hot. It did turn brown, but it never turned hot. I went to the restroom and practically fell off when the loose toilet seat teetered. In my annoyance, I realized something. Something huge. I don’t want any more cold showers. I don’t want to brush my teeth, my face, my body, my dishes, nor my food with brown water. I don’t want to sleep in any more tarantula- infested attics, nor in dilapidated wooden shacks sweltering in heat and decorated with mosquitoes as thick as fog. I don’t want to share my bedroom with the neighbor’s cats who have taken the area under my kids’ bed for a litter pan. I don’t want sand flies, or drunk drugged people around me. I don’t want to hold the computer up just so to get internet and I don’t want to eat junky, starchy, white-floured processed foods because I can’t find or can’t afford the healthy alternatives. I don’t want breathe...

Life on the Road Interview: Fiona Backpacker From Scotland- Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Life on the Road Interview: Fiona Backpacker From Scotland- Kanchanaburi, Thailand

OK, seriously, I can’t take Kobi anywhere in public. It’s too embarrassing. We’re sitting in Kanchanaburi, Thailand at the Sugar Cane 2 (not to be confused with number 1) on the bamboo chairs and we start chit chatting with this adorable girl with a huge smile and foo-foo hair bows. She’s so adorable. Kobi: Hi. What’s your name? Foo Foo Girl: Fiona! Kobi: Oh, I’m Shrek! My jaw drops. “Oh my God, dear Lord Jesus Christ [says the Jew] tell me you didn’t just say that to her.” Earth swallow me up now. Her face contorts for the briefest split-second (and I’m pretty sure she rolled her eyes) before she breaks out in a laugh.”I get that a lot!” I don’t remember if she punched him (or I did, or I just wished someone would) but either way, she was a dear, with the cutest accent, a really beautiful new budding love story, and so much stuff that I think we have to legally disqualify her as a backpacker....

Back Stage Hysterical Fun With Strait Groove Band from Singapore- Backhome Hostel, KL, Malaysia

Back Stage Hysterical Fun With Strait Groove Band from Singapore- Backhome Hostel, KL, Malaysia

Sometimes, we cry and tell you how miserable we are and how we try to crawl out of it. Sometimes, we admit big mistakes with high ticket prices and bow to learning. Sometimes, we try hard not to judge people making the choices are right for them. Sometimes, we’re having unreal crazy adventures and screaming in foam fights. Sometimes, we’re sharing all the irresponsible, stupid stuff we’ve done that could have killed us. Sometimes, we’re really confused and we’re missing home. And sometimes, we’re jamming with artists and cool people across the globe. Meet Srait Groove and get ready to chill and laugh. This short video oddly recorded on the kitchen table at Backhome Hostel (it was a challenge to get us all to fit into the screen) shows how awesome they are. We love the best hostel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Backhome Hostel, who hosted us for A MONTH, which we will never forget! They became our family, and rightfully so, for they are a family of staff that...

Twelve Really Interesting, Cool, Unknown Facts about Ireland – Family Travel Blog Dream #429

Twelve Really Interesting, Cool, Unknown Facts about Ireland – Family Travel Blog Dream #429

They say mother earth is breathing With each wave that finds the shore Her soul rises in the evening For to open twilight’s door Her eyes are the stars in heaven Watching o’er us all the while And her heart it is in Ireland Deep within the Emerald Isle. Ireland has always been on my bucket list. Always. This Garth Brooks song did it for me. So did the dancing in that forbidden galley in the movie Titanic. So does the entire Irish and Scottish fog, folklore, mystic, that accent, and the Celtic music. We had a CD once that Kobi and I played on repeat for months. The topography of rock and mountain, sky and marsh, and a whole bunch more I’m not aware of draw me to Ireland like nowhere else on the globe. Here are Twelve Really Interesting, Cool, Unknown Facts about Ireland that make me dream of going even more.  Yes, I’m dreaming again, and these facts are really fascinating. Will you join me? Ireland...
