Christmas Break Reflections- Goa, India

Christmas Break Reflections- Goa, India

It’s the end of Christmas Break, the kids are outside building a fortress, and I’m here inside sucking on some holiday mint M&M’s. We’re like monkeys, minus the eating lice eggs part,  picking lice eggs out of each other’s hair as a relaxing pastime. Unlike it was in Houston, it’s hot outside, there are cows and buffalo roaming the streets, and no one, including me, wears deodorant. Sangita our maid/cook/gift from a heaven has quit after one day on the job. It’s been a week since my transition from daughter/sister to mother/wife. Though I had wanted a month in an ashram near here, I got instead a month of reenacting childhood dramas but with endings and hidden character feats I had previously been unaware of. As I told Yael who insisted I could all the work I had hoped to do with my childhood, nuclear family, “It’s so much more romantic, and safer in the ashram,” and so it would have been. Solai and I watched a hummingbird float...

After 18 Months in Asia- Three Oddities of the West & My Little Holiday- Houston, Texas

After 18 Months in Asia- Three Oddities of the West & My Little Holiday- Houston, Texas

“Are you doing the no deodorant Indian thing?” “How about this great perfume?” as she sprays my neck. “Toilet paper goes in the toilet.” “Good God, girl, where the hell are your shoes?” I am shocked how much I don’t fit in, how I’ve changed after eighteen months in Asia, and how funny it is not to know some social norms that I used to live by. Are you ready for three oddities of the Western world? I’m on a holiday alone in Houston, Texas and it’s really raw.  The US in Twelve-Minutes We loved our time as a family in the US, and adored our time in the RV! We’re still drooling over the idea of a USA holidays family adventure again. Kobi made a great video that I thought I could just stick in here before I tell you the odd stuff that I still can’t totally get. It’s a great video Kobi! (The post Twelve Minutes has great pics too!) Three Oddities of the Western World...

Breathing-Taking & Heart-Warming- Diwali 2013 in Goa, India- Family Travel World-Schooling Delights

Breathing-Taking & Heart-Warming- Diwali 2013 in Goa, India- Family Travel World-Schooling Delights

My heart singith. Last week began Diwali and it’s been unreal beautiful. And as Jason Mraz sings to me Living in the Moment, I bask in the loving energy of our landlords, their endless gifts to us, and the joy of being in Goa, India and knowing that this is home. Sigh. Deep, deep sigh. Allow me tell you about the stunning little Hindu holiday called Diwali! Diwali The kids learned in the Vidya Arayna School that Diwali (pronounced: Di-Va-Li) was a princess who chose to renounce her kingdom-hood to escape into the forest with her prince. He was shunned away so that someone else’s plot for kinghood could bear fruit. She told him that she’d rather live a simple life with him in the forest than a fancy one without him in the palace. One day a demon saw Diwali and decided he wanted her. He turned himself into a glimmering deer with eyes blue like the ocean, fur yellow like the sun, and dots brown like the earth. Diwali...

You Ask, We Answer: Five Tidbits of Family Travel Blog Life From the Hood- Goa, India

You Ask, We Answer: Five Tidbits of Family Travel Blog Life From the Hood- Goa, India

So, I’ve become a rather unsocial creature. I enjoy my online friends so much because I love interacting with people who really get my frequency (which is less and less as the years go by). There are people who reply to the blog posts, comment on Facebook, and just let me know “Gabi, I’m here for you, witnessing your life with you. And, with the acne and the hiccups, I love you.” That’s really important to me. And so, I’ve gotten ‘from the hood’ some great questions about family travel life on the road, and I thought to me-self, “Self, share some of insider tidbits of your life with people who care and are sincerely curious. Share,” yes, so I will. The following are five little tidbits about our family travel blog life. These tidbits include what we appreciate, what we do, how we organize our money, why we choose Goa, India as home for the next six months, and how’s our health going. So, let’s dance, shall we?...

I Need A Vacation- When You Just Want Something Else, Somewhere Else, Somehow, and Now

I Need A Vacation- When You Just Want Something Else, Somewhere Else, Somehow, and Now

Naked, I stood there waiting for the water to turn hot. It did turn brown, but it never turned hot. I went to the restroom and practically fell off when the loose toilet seat teetered. In my annoyance, I realized something. Something huge. I don’t want any more cold showers. I don’t want to brush my teeth, my face, my body, my dishes, nor my food with brown water. I don’t want to sleep in any more tarantula- infested attics, nor in dilapidated wooden shacks sweltering in heat and decorated with mosquitoes as thick as fog. I don’t want to share my bedroom with the neighbor’s cats who have taken the area under my kids’ bed for a litter pan. I don’t want sand flies, or drunk drugged people around me. I don’t want to hold the computer up just so to get internet and I don’t want to eat junky, starchy, white-floured processed foods because I can’t find or can’t afford the healthy alternatives. I don’t want breathe...
