So, we begin another amazing contest in two days: Guess Country #11. The last one had Guess Country #10 had had 50 comments-  how cool are you guys? This one, I’m sure, will have tons. And the Best Travel Blog Contest before this, are you ready? 817 comments in total from the original and the run-offs! Dear God, don’t we all have anything better to do in our lives then do online contests? Apparently not, and I’m so glad and grateful for that. So, many have asked me,

“Gabi, precious, Gabi dearest, it is now mid-January, late-February, summer is arriving, it’s almost 2014 love, when exactly did you plan to finally announce the 2012 Best Travel Blog Winners?”

Funny, you should ask. So, here I’m answering BEFORE I open the next contest. It’s like that I-won’t-eat-the-chocolate-bar-until-I finish-my-taxes sort of thing. I love starting new projects, and struggle to finish old ones. But, you knew that and still love me for it. And so, as I wait for those rumbling clouds above to out-pour their body fat, I decided to tell you what’s up, and give you the tallies you’ve been waiting for.

I Do Apologize, Sincerely

On a very personal level I want to say that I am sorry it took me this long. I’ve been, how would you say it,… off. I’ve been dealing with a bucketful of insomnia, heap-fuls of instability in unexpectedly moving five countries since I started this contest, a run-off that I never expected, and I walked uphill both ways in the snow and liked it when I got sick, gained too much weight, and oh, had amazingly awesome experiences exploring South East Asia’s unreal glow of color and delight. Well, looking back at that last little run-on you’d think I only complain and bicker. But, I guess I feel I have to justify to you why it’s Spring and I haven’t given you the answers to one hell of an amazing contest where tons of unbelievable people came out to vote.

One kind sweetheart who was in the race  asked me in an email:

What ended up being the results from your “Best travel blog awards you ran until 5th Feb. I must have missed the results!

Michelle

My honest response:

darling. i’m on a tropical island scuba diving, forcing my kids to study, and peeing in a hole in the plank. there are over 800 comments and so a- love me b- know that last time i did the tally i pulled my hair out c- you are in the top 50 FOR SURE so take the badge, and d- i paid someone on odesk to do the tally for me and i think she died. so, when we figure out where odesk girl is, we’ll have our results. otherwise, i’ll hire a new one to do it. i seriously won’t put myself through the hours of tallying those ALL-AWESOME AND WONDERFUL but tedious votes.

so, you’ve won. take the winner’s badge and when they bring her [o-deak girl] back to life, i’ll have the final results.

you guys are so amazing. thanks for caring dear.

gabi

The Last Time I Said “I’m Sorry”- Huanchaco, Peru (Feb 2012)

Lying To Fit Social Norms

A dear friend I took my 6-month Life and Family Coaching course with told me that she stopped answering phone calls each evening for a few hours to be 100% available to her kids. She told someone in the office and he looked at her very disapprovingly. So, she decided TO LIE. ” My kid is sick”  was accepted much more kindly than “I can’t talk to you now during my home time cuz I’m playing a board game/reading a book/spending time with my child.” That’s ridiculous. And so, inside, I felt it was easier for me to say, “Pity me, don’t be mad. Poor little me, It’s not my fault that all thisssssssssssss happened, ” then to say, “Life is so cool and versatile and I’m having too much fun to be bothered with responsibilities when I really don’t have to be, so let me deal with my life and my needs, and wait, and when I get around to it, I’ll get around to it.”

The People Have Spoken

We had an unprecedented 800+ comments!  Tons of people came out of the woodwork, many clearly were bribed, some were told mom won’t serve you dinner if you don’t, and mostly people voted for blogs that truly, deeply inspired their souls. And that’s what this is about- giving due respect and great honor to those who have inspired our souls to laugh, cry, and get out and travel, vicariously through them, or to arrange our lives in a way that will let us live out our travel dreams.

I could spend hours telling you how travel blogs have moved my soul, about how travel blogs gave me the courage to do what I was terrified beyond words of doing, of how travel blogs assured me that there was another way to live, that there was another model to live out there, and if I were brave enough to take that leap, maybe, just maybe, it was the model for us. And yes, now about to enter year three of non-stop world travel, I know that the nomadic lifestyle suits us, for now. And so, without further ado, here are the winners.

If you want to know how they were nominated, how the voting went, how many bribes I did take under the table, you can read The 2012 Best Travel Blog Award Contest Officially Opens Today post. I talk a lot about my kitchen counter there. I miss him. If you think the voting is wrong, please tell me loves. I did give a few hours to look over the vote tallies that the o-desk girl did but it still may be wrong, so, if you think there is an error, please call it out and we’ll correct it asap.

  1. Oh I think I defiantly know where you are !!!!! You are in my neck of the woods!! A HUGE storm managed to catch me on my walk back from the library to my house in Little India !!!! I was soaked to the bone and everyone was looking at me like a mad lady just running trough the streets with no umbrella, but when it is that bad, you might as well embrace the rain and enjoy the break from the heat!!! I think it might be the same one you are referring to as your last clue said it was hot and it has been sooo not the last few days too!!

I hope I am right!!! How long are you in country No11??? If I am correct about Where you are I would be happy to give some cheap eats places!!! I have been living here for a year to save money and am leaving to start my own open ended travels in 2 months!!!!

Hope you are enjoying your travels
