2012 Best Travel Blog Award Contest Officially Opens Today

2012 Best Travel Blog Award Contest Officially Opens Today

family travel blog, life on the road with kids, travel with kids, world travel with kids, world travel with children, the nomadic family, budget world travel, framily travel tips, RTW family travel, 2012 best travel blogs, family travel southeast asia with kids, famiy travel central america with children, family travel south america with kids, annapurna circuit with children, life on the road malaysia, rtw family travel, rtw family travel peru, rtw family travel cambodia, rtw family travel ecuador, rtw family travel panama, rtw family travel costa rica, rtw family travel colombia, rtw family travel vietnam, rtw family travel thailand, rtw family travel south east asia, life on the road RV, philippines, malaysia, rtw family travel nepal, rtw family travel india, ups and down on the road, spiritual travel, meditation and parenting, on the spiritual journey around the world, the nomadic family project documentary movie

Before we left, I was terrified to leave all we knew for ” The Great Unknown”! And late at night, when I should have been in bed, long after showers, and fights, but before the kitchen counter was clean, I’d go online and drool over travel blogs. I’d be jealous, and scared, and excited, and scared, “They can do this! I, I need the security of my kitchen counter!” And, well, years later, and on the road,  I’m still in awe and totally inspired by travel bloggers, their ever-changing world, the way they flow with change, the adventures they fall into. And, so I wanted to honor them, thank them, the coolest, and most inspirational of them all!

But, who am I to decide who the coolest, most inspirational travel blogs are? There are so many of them, and so many of you, so, you decide. Let your voice be heard, cast your vote, and honor those who inspired you to hit the road, or who allow you vicariously to experience all that world has to offer, safely from your kitchen counter. You know they are amazing, how they share even the shittiest moments, and how much courage it must take, not only to explore this great globe, but to put themselves out there, to be vulnerable to the world as they hang the most intimate details of their lives before all to see. So, if you’ve got a blog that just does it for you, honor them, tell them thanks, tell your friends to vote for them. You know they so deserve it, so, let’s give them a hand, and an award.

  1. I can’t vote for me and presumably I can’t vote for you, as you’re the organisers, so I vote for Dave and Vicky, ‘cos they’re all young and nice and stuff..http://acoupletravelers.com/

    • alyson dear you can vote for yourself if you’re travel blog has been around for 6 months, and of course, you can vote for little ole me. i am a cool travel blogger! you can nominate up to five blogs.

  2. This is so awesome!

I nominate The Nomad Grad (http://www.NomadGrad.com)- A blog dedicated to nomadic lifestyle, local living, and adventure story-telling. It’s raw, honest (not always pretty), and driven by reader engagement and enthusiasm!

I also nominate Lauren Rains of The Mad To Live (http://www.themadtolive.com) because she’s a total badass and probably the most down-to-earth travel blogger I’ve encountered.

    • hilary, thanks so much for introducing me to two amazing blogs i’ve never seen. i never thought of that, that this will expose people to so many awesome new blogs. thank you. and please, you can nominate three more, use your voice dear. thanks, gabi

      • You’re so welcome! =) Let me look through my list of favorite blogs and see if I can decide on three others. =)

    • Hilary, Gabi/Kobi –
Hilary, thanks so much for nominating me for this award, and for the kind words! I’m honored and so thankful!! 🙂 You are freaking badass too!!

Gabi and Kobi – this is so fantastic that you’re putting this contest on! I can’t wait to check out all these other amazing travelers and find out what they’re up to! This is also my first time on your blog, so now I have the pleasure of checking you guys out as well!
      – Lauren 🙂

      • lauren, welcome to our world and to all the unreal blogs that are out there. i’m so honored that you discovered us, and that you, like me, have all these cool blogs to check out. i’m also really excited. hilary said such great things about you, what an honor, i’m sure. please copy and paste the coding onto your sidebar and in facebook to try and get as many votes as you can by dec 26. i wish you the world of luck. be sure to come back each day to cast a vote for yourself. 🙂 gabi

    • tracey, barbara has a fantastic blog, i agree. she is just an amazing person. You can nominate four more dear, so nominate yourself and three others and let’s get this ball rollin.

  3. Well clearly, eh-hem, I’d nominate myself, thenomadicfamily.com right? It’s in the rules, which i conveniently made up myself. He he he! So, go vote for us, and four other blogs you love, or go bite yourself. Those are your choices. You pick.

  4. The delightfully potty Pedersen family and their fabulous blog “Life Changing Year” get my vote. The writing is crisp and highly amusing and I have learned heaps about some amazing places all over the world. Tracey’s genuinely outgoing nature, great sense of humour and zest for life shines through on every page. It took a determined and gutsy family to sell pretty much everything they owned and take off around the world with their children. I do believe that anyone who reads their blog cannot help but love this family 🙂 http://lifechangingyear.com/

    • alison, thank you for the vote for tracey and family. they are the best, and she is hysterical beyond words. i’m a huge fan. check out here last entry about her next biggest project, she even linked to me. I LOVE them (and got to meet them in houston when i tried to kidnap, unsuccessfully, Jono!) you can pick four others if you want, and you can vote for tracey’s lifechangingyear every day! thanks. gabi

      • I’ll be back tomorrow then, for sure. So glad you’re a fan, they really are amazing 🙂

          • I would like to vote for Tracey Pedersen again and her brilliant blog Life Changing Year please 🙂 And Tracey, get on here and vote for yourself woman!

          • i know! she is so lazy. clearly, not lazy of an award she is not willing to vote for.

          • Lol, believe it or not she is too modest! Feel embarrassed at nominating herself. Bless her cotton socks.

          • I voted on the 6th and the 7th and it is now the 8th here, so I would like to vote again for Life Changing Year if that’s ok :)http://lifechangingyear.com/

          • alison, you are doing great! tell some friends. tracey is doing great here. good for you. she voted at 12:01am. god.

    • hi bethany dear. thank you for the nomination, another blog i’ve never heard of. thank you. you said ‘also’ but i only got this one nomination. if you intended to nominate yourself or any other four blogs, please do so again, cuz i didn’t get it. sorry love. and thanks for nominating. you can do five votes a day. mwa! gabi

        • great bethaney. you’ve nominated three wonderful, joyful, worthy blogs for sure. you can nominate two more. god, this is so much fun. peruse the comments bethaney, there are tons of blogs out there i have never heard of! so cool. so, you can nominate two more, and can cast 5 votes a day… mwah. gabi

    • hello kimberly, thank you so much for your nominations. i am so excited as 4 out of 5 of them i have never even heard of. what a treat to be able to learn of other great travel blogs. thank you so much. please come back to vote for them as often as you can between tomorrow and dec 26, and tell others who love them too. i do hope they win, and again, thanks so much. can’t wait to set aside time to sit and get to know some inspirational travel bloggers. hugs to you, gabi

    • i could eat you up, but then you wouldn’t be back to vote some more. god, you make me blush, you do, i am. you are so cute. god, how did i get so lucky to have melanie in my life. really? so, darling, darling, nominate some more great ones, and i know you know all of the best ones out there. i love you melanie. and thank god, the stars, the universe, and all the fairies and elves out there for bringing you into our lives. remember that, ok? i love you. gabi

    • hello colleen. how lovely to meet you! so glad you nominated travelmamas. i’m embarrassed to say i haven’t yet seen your awesome site. guess what i’ll be doing today! thank you for nominating. tell those who love your site to vote for you. each person can vote once a day…. thanks, gabi

  5. I liked to nominate act of traveling

    • Tom welcome and thanks for the nomination. Emiel’s act of traveling is already in the race so you’re nomination will clearly be a vote for his blog. emiel is so awesome! be sure to stop by every day to give him another vote and tell a few friends. it would be an honor to see emiel win! thanks tom. gabi

    • oh, i’m so excited to read your list 30traveler. two of them i’ve never heard of (so, again, i have new amazing blogs to check out) and the other three, are soooo good. wow. thank you for voting and please come back every day until dec 26 to vote for your blogs. feel free to copy one of the pics to your facebook page also, and ask friends to vote for the blogs you like. goodnight. gabi

    • because it’s the coolest travel blog ever.

      • Gaby, this is definitely a vote for Act of Traveling! It’s my Dad voting..

    • Yes you are! Glad you did 🙂

  6. I nominate Handcarry Only: http://handcarryonly.com/
Not only are Adrian’s photos beautiful & compelling, they make me feel transported every time I look at them. The also show such interesting details about the world, things I might never see, places I might never be. I feel lucky to have found this blog. 🙂

    • i had never heard of this blog. the photos are amazing.t hank you for widening my world kate.

  7. Hey gabi – I can’t make the picture work on my site. I can’t believe I’m asking you a technical question but how do I stick it in my sidebar? Can you check the code? I managed to stick something else in my sidebar today but yours won’t show when I do it the same way! Thanks.

    • oh god we’re in deep shit now…. blind leading the blind to salvation. i’ve copy pasted directly from my sidebar and it worked on mine:

      .
you can try it also by deleting the br’s in the front and back. OR reduce the size where it says width and height, maybe my sizes are too big for your sidebar. be sure you are using an option that says ‘html’ otherwise, it won’t recognize the script. how snazzy do i sound. like i really know what i’m doing. i know! bow to me now!

      • I will definitely bow to you on this one! Those are great suggestions and it is probably just too wide. I’ll try it again in the morning. Thanks genius!!

    • when i put the coding here it showed me the pic. so, cuz i vaguely like you i copied and pasted it into the post and compared. they are identical. should work. if it does not after you tried the things i suggested, we’ll ask someoneelse to try and put it in and see if it works. ask emiel if it worked for him. he’s gotten lots of votes so far…

      • It’s in my sidebar now! Can I take this opportunity dear to vote once more for Act of Traveling?!

        • how cute were you two in this little contest. i should make you special pain in the ass but in a cute way certificates. i love you both so much.

  8. And it’s a minute past midnight on the 8th according to your comments so I’m voting for myself again!! lol – you said once a day!!

    • you are so barely legal. it figures. really, why am i not surprised…

      • and on that note, i’d like to vote for the nomadic family, if i may. .

    • so how much did tracey pay you for this dear?

    • i can’t believe it did not tell you how amazing gypseekers are in my opinion too. i love erin and her family to death. thank you for voting.

  9. I would like to nominate our blog http://gypseekers.com

A family of 3 who aren’t ultra-rich or particularly lucky set off on a life-changing 8-month adventure. Thanks!

    • i got lost in the 200 comments erin dear. how are you? i’m so glad you entered the contest and i wish you and your family a happy new year. haven’t heard much from you lately erin. how are you?

  10. I nominate gypseekers.com Following Steve, Erin and 4 year old Tyler on their trip around the world has fascinated me all year long. I love their comments on what they have seen and learned.

    • carole. so nice to meet you. i apologize for my very delayed reply. i got side tracked in moving around cambodia, and moving to vietnam, and life. i love gypseekers so. thank you for taking the time to say how awesome they are, for they are. gabi

thank you for the three nominations. i admit with delight i have never heard of any of them and clearly have some great reading to do. so many inspirational blogs out there, so much travel reading to do. thank you. i apologize for the delay in my response. 200+ comments very quickly became too much for me to reply to. thank you for caring. happy new year from vietnam. gabi

  11. I love the courageousness of this family. And they are sooooo brutally honest and seriously funny

      • yeah right, i’ll take him. i’ve never met shazazzle but when i was in kindergarden with all the kids from foreign countries whose parents couldn’t speak english we had a shaad in our class. so there.

  12. Love it love it love it and the family is pretty good too.

  13. I would like to nominate 4 blogs plus my own blog. It feels kinda cheating to put myself in but one thing I really am appreciating about this contest is the opportunity to visit and get to know others out there in the travel blog arena that I haven’t met as yet.
    http://www.vintagecaravans.com/
    http://www.newlifeontheroad.com/
    http://www.sparklingadventures.com/
    http://wheelingit.wordpress.com/tag/rv-blog/
And then come little ‘ol mine
    http://robbiebago.blogspot.com

    • hello michelle. you are so cool and too sweet. you totally don’t have to apologize for not voting for us. fuck it, if we don’t win legally, i’ll find a loophole in the rules or i’ll rig it. don’t worry 🙂 but i do hope you get the chance to come back and get to know us better. i can’t believe it, four out of the five blogs you nominated, i’ve never heard of before. like you said, i love it that this contest is giving so many new blogs the spot light. so many wonderful new travel blogs to get to know. so very very cool. oh, and you have to nominate yourself dear. toot your own horn away, run naked with it through the streets. you know you’re worth and should proudly strut it. can’t wait to set aside the time to sit and read your and the other new ones you brought. be sure you come back every day until dec 26 to vote for your five so that they can win! thanks…. hope to see you here more, and on facebook. hugs, gabi

  26. So wait, is there a time when nominations stop and ‘voting’ begins? Or are all votes supposed to be posted as comments on this blog? Is a nomination considered a vote, or are you nulling all nominations?

Just a little confused on how this works and want to make sure I give my followers the correct information. =)

    • hi hilary. great questions. let me clarify. once a site is nominated, every comment with their name counts as a vote. if someone nominates a blog that is already in the contest, i count that as a vote. voice is a voice. 🙂 tell them to come vote every day until dec 26. 🙂

i’m so glad you joined the voting right now and you are right, it does not matter if you win or not, it matters that you found a cool community of travel bloggers, that you are expressing your voice through your ‘baby’ and that you are traveling the world. there is a definite run off. i’m tallying up the votes right now and there are too many ties so you will have a chance to get your mom and mom-in-law and bribe anyone you know to vote for you in the run-offs. i’ll email you asap what you can do. can’t wait to visit you blog by the way. gabi
